What is indices?
A stock index measures the performance of a basket of shares, typically the largest or most representative companies in a market. The S&P 500 (US500), for example, tracks the 500 largest US-listed companies; the Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) tracks the 100 largest non-financial Nasdaq stocks. The level of the index is a weighted average of its constituents.
Index CFDs let you take a view on the overall direction of a market bullish or bearish without buying every individual stock. They're widely used to hedge equity portfolios, speculate on macro releases (CPI, payrolls, FOMC) or capture cyclical rotations between regions and sectors.

Contract sizes vary by index: 1 lot of US500 is 50 index points (so a $1 move = $50 P/L), while 1 lot of NAS100 is 20 points. Leverage of up to 1:200 lets you scale exposure efficiently. Most indices trade 23 hours a day, 5 days a week, with a short daily break for futures rollover.
When the underlying index components pay dividends, a cash adjustment is credited (to longs) or debited (from shorts) on the ex-dividend day, so your P/L is unaffected by the dividend itself.
